About

Paula was the former Digital Technologies Curriculum Manager at the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority where she was responsible for the digital technologies curricula from Foundation to Year 12. She was a co-writer of the Australian Digital Technologies Curriculum and the Australian Curriculum ICT general capability. She has conducted professional learning programs at regional, state, national and international levels and has co-authored senior secondary textbooks in the field of digital technologies. Paula has also been a member of several national committees focusing on Digital Technologies and ICT as a general capability. In 2014 Paula was made a life member of Digital Learning and Teaching Victoria (DLTV) as well as receiving the Dorothy Hoddinott Medal from the Australian Professional Teachers Association for outstanding lifetime achievement. In 2017 Paula received the ‘Making IT Happen’ award from the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE). Currently, Paula co-edits a journal for the Victorian Commercial Teachers Association and consults on digital technologies matters.

Keynote: In the crease of time

Schools move at different paces when implementing any change—sometimes the cause is intentional, other times it is unintentional. Where is your school positioned with respect to the implementation of the Australian Digital Technologies Curriculum? Is your school stuck in the past? Is it struggling, though willing to move to the future? Is it confidently chasing the future? Using a traffic light analogy, this presentation will characterise schools in the red zone (the past), the amber zone (the crease) and the green zone (moving forward), as well as propose strategies to support all schools move further along the implementation track. There are a range of hindrances and enhances to change, and some of these will be examined in terms of their specific characteristics as well as strategies for minimising the impact of hindrances and maximising the effect of enhancers. This presentation will take both a macro (whole-school) approach as well as a micro (level/classroom) approach to help schools shift along continuum—to reach for Digi Tech teaching and learning heights and move out of the crease of time.

Cathy is probably best known for her work on iPadartroom.com, a home base for educators to engage with innovative ideas, resources and technology for learning in that combines paint and pixels. Her site has grown to become the ‘go-to’ resource for teachers leveraging mobile devices for creativity. She is also an Apple Distinguished Educator serving on the Advisory Board for the Asia-Pacific region. Recent accolades include the 2016 International Society of Technology in Education (ISTE) Mobile Learning Innovation Award, two Digital Innovation in Learning Award honourable mentions from Edsurge/Digital Promise and 21st Century Learning International’s Teacher of the Year finalist. Cathy’s iBook, ‘More iPad Art’ also won Best Non-Fiction and Best Reference title at the iBA Awards in Nashville.

Susan McLean is Australia’s foremost expert in the area of cyber safety and was a member of Victoria Police for 27 years. Widely known as the ‘cyber cop’ she was the first Victoria Police Officer appointed to a position involving cyber safety and young people. In 2003 she was the Victoria Police Region Four Youth Officer of the Year. She has also been awarded The National Medal and the Victoria Police Service Medal and 2nd Clasp, and the National Police Medal.

Susan is a passionate advocate for child safety online and has established an enviable working relationship with most of the key players in the online world who value her extensive knowledge, balanced commentary and commitment. She has recently been appointed as a member of the National Centre Against Bullying (NCAB) and is regularly invited to present on the international stage. The major companies such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and You Tube defer to her with relation to issues affecting Australian Children. She has been asked to review prior to launch in Australia, Google’s YouTube for kids. Law Enforcement, corporations, schools, parents and children themselves find Susan knowledgeable, approachable and most importantly, she often has the ability to assist when others have failed.

Susan has a unique understanding of the education system having worked with schools for over 20 years. She understands a school’s legal responsibility, both Criminal and Civil & has extensive knowledge of Duties of Care in the education sector. She has authored the Victorian Department of Education and Early Childhood Development’s parent resources in relation to all things cyber and provided comprehensive fact sheets and online learning modules to parents. She is the most highly qualified Federal Government eSafety certified educator.

Susan’s presentations are vibrant and engaging and draw on her many years experience working in cyberspace.
